Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Let me introduce myself. My name is and I’m a student of . The subject of my presentation is a professional burnout. My topic is very important for you because you are all future professionals who, I suppose, want to be successful in life. I’ve divided my presentation into 3 main parts. First I’ll be looking at different variants of understanding this term. Second I’ll go on to it’s indicators. Third I’ll focus on the reasons of burnout. Finally I’ll draw a conclusion and offer some prophylactic advice. My presentation will take about 7 minutes. There will be time for questions after my presentation.

I think we first need to identify the term. This term was created by the psychiatrist H.J. Freudenberger. At the moment, there are several options for understanding professional burnout: 1) the result of bad resolution of stressful situations at work (L. A. Vainshtein, T. N. Roginskaya, M. M. Skugarev-kaya); 2) a protective mechanism of our personality (L.D. Demina, V.V. Boyko), that partially block emotions in response to save us in traumatic situations; 3) the result of the comparison, when workers compare their activities with the activities of other people - personal contribution to work, public recognition, social security and confidence in their economic stability (B.P. Bunk, V. B. Shaumeli); 4) disappointment in the search for the meaning of life (A. Pines). An employee with high motivation, who considers his work to be the meaning of life, has difficulties or does not feel his own competence in the activity, then he experiences failure more painfully than an employee with other core values. Based on the foregoing, we will use the definition by G. A. Makarova, which means professional burnout as a state of cognitive, physical and emotional tiredness due to chronic stress at work. Now I’d like to draw your attention to the second part of my presentation in which I’d like to speak about the symptoms of burnout. Based on the analysis of psychological scientific literature, five main groups of symptoms of professional burnout can be distinguished: 1) symptoms of a physical condition - tiredness, lack of sleep, chronic diseases; 2) emotional symptoms - aggression, low level of emotionality, anxiety, guilt, depression, feelings of hopelessness and loneliness; 3) symptoms of behavior - impulsive behavior, long periods of work, addictions, eating disorders, frequent accidents and injuries; 4) cognitive symptoms - conservatism and a strict denial of changes, unwillingness to develop, lack of motivation and interest; 5) social symptoms – escape from communication both in the work team and in personal life, a feeling of lack of support from others. Now I’d like to draw your attention to the third part of my presentation in which I’d like to speak about the reasons of burnout. Reasons can be divided into two main groups: objective prerequisites (associated with working conditions) and subjective (associated with personality traits).

Objective reasons include: high work tension, the need to show empathy for clients, intellectual and physical overload, a high degree of responsibility, the bad features of the organizational culture and problems with communication within the work team. Subjective premises, at first, include age – young people (19-25 years old) and middle-aged specialists (40-50 years old) are the most exposed to burnout. V. V. Boyko attributes increased personal responsibility for the results of his work, weak motivation, sentimentality, anxiety. Low self-esteem and level of sociability, high demands on yourself, high level of neuroticism, altruism and sensitivity are also significant. In conclusion I’d like to highlight some personal traits that help us not to have burnout. Creativity and a sense of humor, as well as optimism and personal activity as life dispositions are factors that negatively correlate with professional burnout. According to this facts, we should remember to follow these simple rules. - allow enough time for sleep, relaxation, hobby and thought. Remember that you have the right not only to work, but also to have privacy; - express your desires directly, clearly and honestly, speak about it to your family, friends and at work; - be attentive to yourself: this will help you notice the first symptoms of tiredness and stop when you need; - choose a business for yourself, according to your interests and abilities. This will allow you to find yourself and believe in yourself; - do not try to live for others or control them. Live your own life at every moment; - if you really want to help someone or do his work for him, ask yourself: does he really need it? Or maybe he can handle it himself?
